He (she) who cannot subordinate their present for their future is likely to relive their past. It is our ability to invest our time, energy, and effort in the present moment that allows us to create and manifest a future of our desire. It is this choice, this example of free will, that determines our future more than anything else. We can luxuriate in the present and exploit its wonders, but without the discipline to invest some of our present for the future we are doomed to decay and chaos and to likely re-experience the lessons of our past. The present moment is all we have to create the future we desire. And while that desired future may not always unfold, without the effort expended in the present to manifest it, it surely never will.
